About The East Windsor Ambulance Association Print E-mail

The East Windsor Ambulance Association was established in 1978 as a volunteer, non-profit, ambulance corps. To this day the association remains non-profit and intends to remain non-profit. The association originally operated one ambulance at the basic life support level. The East Windsor Ambulance responded to approximately 75 calls that year.

In 1989 the EWAA increased the level of care provided to the Intermediate level. This meant technicians were trained to establish intravenous lines, operate defibrillators and had more advanced patient assessment skills. The ambulance association continued to operate one ambulance and responded to approximately 150 calls that year.

In 1995 the EWAA hired it's very first paid employees. Two EMT's were hired to cover the growing number of vacant weekday shifts. Eventually almost all of the members were compensated for their time with a paid per call type system. EWAA continued to operate one ambulance and responded to approximately 300 calls that year.

In 2002 the EWAA made drastic changes to the organization. All members were now paid part-time employees. Paramedics were added to the staff providing the most advanced medical care available in the pre-hospital setting. A second ambulance was staffed during peak call volume periods. The EWAA responded to more than 1200 calls that year.

EWAA presently operates two advanced life support (ALS) transport ambulances staffed with paramedics, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A third and fourth ambulance is staffed during peak call volume periods along with three paramedic response vehicles. We currently employ 20 paramedics and 20 EMT's providing the highest level of pre-hospital care available in the State of Connecticut. We also provide public education, the File of Life program and a medical bike team for use at special events such as parades, sporting events, carnivals and festivals.

While the EWAA receives some funding from the Town of East Windsor by way of a formal contract, we rely heavily on billing for service through insurance companies and public donations. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation please click on Donate. Thank you for your support.
